Open Access
The Open Access of the research results can be achieved through:
- "Green Road" means the open access mode of publication of a record, originally published in a journal, by depositing it in an open archive, in its editorial digital version or in its revised or post-print digital version and made accessible even after a period of temporary closure ("embargo period") defined by the publisher.
To check the journals' open access policies, you can consult the Sherpa Romeo online resource that aggregates and analyses publisher open access policies from around the world and provides summaries of publisher copyright and open access archiving policies on a journal-by-journal basis.
OpenDOAR is the directory that collects open access archives at a global level where to deposit resources and research results.
- "Gold road" means the method of publishing a contribution in a journal with open and immediate access, sometimes financed by the Author or by the institution to cover the expenses of organization, revision, formatting and archiving (APC, Article Processing Charges)
DOAJ (the Directory of Open Access Journals) provides the list and description of open access journals, detailing the occurrence of APC. It is good to distinguish open journals, i.e. non-subscription journals that in some cases require APC to publish with open access, from hybrid journals, i.e. subscription journals that give the possibility to publish open access only upon payment of the APC (double dipping). DOAB (the Directory of Open Access Books) is a directory that gathers the publishers who allow you to publish open access books.
- "Diamond Road" means the non-profit publication method of a record made available online in digital format, free of charge for readers and authors (e.g. the European Commission's Open Research Europe platform). This road does not allow commercial or for-profit reuse.
Beneficiaries of projects funded by Horizon Europe must ensure open access to scientific publications by immediate deposit (without embargo) in a “trusted repository” under the latest available version of Creative Commons Attribution International, Public License (CC BY). Beneficiaries may need to interact with prospective publishers in order to retain sufficient intellectual property rights (IPR) to comply with their open access obligations. In Horizon Europe, only expenses for publications in full open access and on-line journals are reimbursable, costs for publications in hybrid journals or printed are excluded.
